Structure: Safer South Africa Foundation

Safer South Africa Foundation has a board that is responsible for governance and management. The board contributes to the strategic direction of the Foundation and provides advice, guidance and through various networks and contacts to partner organisations. 

The Safer South Africa Foundation’s strategy, projects and activities are reviewed at quarterly Board meetings. The Board plays an active role in supporting the Foundation’s vision and mission.

GENERAL RIAH PHIYEGA (RET)

General Mangwashi Victoria ‘Riah ‘Phiyega

(Retired) is an experienced past senior executive in both the public and private sector having served in various executive positions.

  • She is the current CEO of Safer South Africa Foundation as well as an Executive Board Member.
  • She is also the Executive Director of the Women’s Development Business Trust (WDB Trust)
  • She is the Chairperson of Workerslife Insurance Company
  • She is a past National Commissioner of Police,
  • She had an illustrious career in the corporate and public sector  holding senior leadership roles; Group Executive for Absa Bank Limited; Group Executive at Transnet; Executive Ports Authority.

Endowed with a wealth of governance experience, she served on numerous boards of companies, NGO’s and University Councils.  She is a member of the International Women’s Forum (IWFSA)

 

She served in numerous Commissions:

  • The Road Accident Fund Commission Chaired by Judge Satchwell;
  • The Presidential Review Committee for SOE’s which she chaired;
  • The Independent Commission for the Remuneration of Public Office Bearers as Deputy Chairperson;
  • Board member of the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup Bid Committee.

 

She holds:

  • BA (SW) degree from the University of the North
  • BA (SS) Hons from Unisa
  • MA (SS) degree from the University of Johannesburg
  • Post Graduate Diploma in Business Administration from Wales University.

 

She also attended Executive Development Programmes at:

  • the National University of Singapore
  • Wharton University, Pennsylvania in the US.
  • She completed a Professional Coaching Course (PCC) Centre for Coaching UCT.
