Strategic Aims of Safer South Africa Foundation

The vision for founding the Safer South Africa Foundation stemmed from discussions with a wide range of stakeholders in their quest to help the government fight and prevent crime. The Foundation is a public expression of the civil society's commitment to collaborating with like-minded partners to contribute towards building a safer South Africa.

The aims of the Safer South Africa Foundation are:

    • To mobilize and empower local communities, to join hands in the fight against crime in order to contribute to the improvement and protection of their community. This is achieved by developing strategic partnerships with like-minded organizations implementing community safety programmes tailored to the needs of the community. Prime amongst the initiatives being the introduction of programmes that develop community awareness, education and activism.
    • To promote an enhanced level of security in South Africa’s communities by providing an independent perspective on policing, crime, rehabilitation and integration of offenders as well as road safety. This will involve research and analysis of policy, legislation, practice and recommendation of good practice, changes in legislation and practice through advocacy as well as campaigns.
    • To work in partnership with the security cluster, community-based formations, businesses and others to help improve safety in communities. This is to be delivered through using bespoke programmes designed to improve collaboration and relationships with law enforcement agencies and communities. Furthermore, interventions are geared towards improved understanding and awareness of crime prevention as well as community safety.
    • To educate the public about the criminal justice system and encourage and support research to inform community-based crime prevention strategies. To be achieved by civil society organizations delivering community safety programmes, education, awareness, mobilization, advocacy and partnerships with other safety working groups.
    • To save lives and minimize road traffic-related injuries and fatalities by initiating programmes to improve road user safety through education, awareness, campaigns and advocacy.
