    Development Programme

    Safer South Africa Foundation

The Youth4SaferSouthAfrica Debate and Leadership Programme, developed with The Training Firm, is a multi-week initiative to empower young learners with public speaking and leadership skills. Focused on enhancing the Criminal and Justice Programme (CJP), the programme was launched in 2020. It aims to deepen participants' understanding of South Africa's criminal justice system and their role in promoting safety in schools and communities. Unlike traditional debates, the programme emphasises team-based discussions, research, and advocacy on weekly topics, training learners to speak confidently as panelists. It equips diverse youth from across the country with skills for future success.

The programme is designed to facilitate learning by progressing the participants through a multi-week structured learning programme with the emphasis placed on varying topics each week. [click here]

2025 Theme: Voices for South Africa, Engaging the National Dialogue

The 2025 Youth4SaferSouthAfrica Debate and Leadership Development Programme was held under the theme “Voices for South Africa: Engaging the National Dialogue.”

Inspired by President Cyril Ramaphosa’s National Dialogue initiative, a people-led process aimed at reflecting on our nation’s challenges, resetting priorities, and reimagining South Africa’s future, the competition invited young people to explore and engage with some of South Africa’s most urgent societal issues through critical thinking, empathy, and leadership.

    About the Competition

Learners from across the country participated in a speech competition designed to mirror the structure of the National Dialogue. Competing in teams of five, each participant took on a leadership role, presenting their ideas and proposed solutions for a better South Africa.

    Programme Structure

    • Speaker 1: Introductory Speaker (Chairperson of the Preparatory Task Team)
Opened the Dialogue, outlined its purpose, and set the tone for the discussion.

    • Speakers 2–4: Thematic Speakers
Each addressed one key national issue, drawing inspiration from the values and leadership of
eminent South Africans. Their role was to interpret these leaders’ vision, not to imitate, but to
      innovate.

    • Poverty, Inequality & Hunger

Inspired by one of the following: Dr Imtiaz Sooliman, Justice Edwin Cameron, Archbishop Thabo Makgoba

    • Social Cohesion & Nation Building

Inspired by one of the following: John Kani, Siya Kolisi, Kgothatso Montjane

    • Gender-Based Violence & Safety

Inspired by one of the following: Mia le Roux, Lindiwe Mazibuko, Nompendulo Mkhatshwa

    • Speaker 5: Concluding Speaker (Chairperson of the Steering Committee)

Summarised the dialogue and presented a unified programme of action.

    What the Audience Experienced

Audience members listened to learners deliver well-researched, passionate speeches rooted in biographies, interviews, and factual data.

Participants critically examined both the potential and the challenges of the National Dialogue, raising questions around inclusivity, implementation, and how to ensure the process creates meaningful change.

Reimagining the Future of South Africa

The Youth4SaferSouthAfrica Debate Competition, held on 07 September 2024, focused on a theme inspired by South Africa's political shift toward collaboration. Participants explored the debate topic, 'The Government of National Unity: Reimagining the Future of South Africa,' which encouraged them to envision the transformative potential of this new political landscape in fostering a just and prosperous society.
