    Anti-Bullying Initiative

In response to concerning reports of bullying among learners under 13 years old at Walter Sisulu and Philena Primary Schools in Olivenhoutbosch, the Safer South Africa Foundation partnered with the University of South Africa (UNISA) to address these issues through the Express Communities and Justice Programme (CJP). This initiative was started by UNISA.

While UNISA led the programme, the Safer South Africa Foundation supported the Safety and Security component, focusing on creating safer learning environments and promoting respect and inclusion among learners. The campaign included community walks against crime and multi-stakeholder interventions, fostering collaboration between schools, communities, and justice stakeholders.

This initiative underscores the importance of early intervention and collective action in addressing bullying and creating safer educational spaces for children.

    Annual Silent Walk/Run

The Silent Walk/Run, organized annually by the Neema Foundation for the Deaf during Deaf Awareness Month, promotes inclusion and understanding between hearing and Deaf communities. It educates the public about Deaf culture, South African Sign Language (SASL), and challenges like limited access to services and education. Since 2018, the Safer South Africa Foundation (SSAF) has partnered in this initiative, addressing barriers Deaf individuals face, particularly in the criminal justice system due to a lack of sign language interpreters.

SSAF has supported the event’s implementation across seven provinces, enabling participants to experience Deaf perspectives and fostering empathy. The Silent Walk/Run also raises funds for programs tackling issues like gender-based violence in the Deaf community while advocating for greater accessibility and inclusivity. Its objectives include promoting SASL, improving hearing-Deaf relations, raising awareness of Deaf rights, encouraging sensitivity in service sectors, and creating economic and educational opportunities for Deaf individuals.

21 Acts of Goodness for Matriculants 2022

In 2022, the Safer South Africa Foundation (SSAF) partnered with the Old Mutual Foundation for the 21 Acts of Goodness initiative, targeting matriculants under the Consciousness Education pillar. Through SSAF’s Communities and Justice Programme (CJP), learners in five provinces-Limpopo, North West, KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, and Free State-gained critical knowledge to address crime in their schools and communities. Supported by stakeholders like the South African Police Service, Traffic Policing Department, and National Prosecuting Authority, the CJP fostered responsibility and empowered informed decision-making. Exceeding its annual target, the programme reached numerous learners, expanded SSAF’s reach, and demonstrated the impact of collective action. Strong school enthusiasm for its return highlights its success.
